Tropicana Field
Tropicana Field, located in St. Petersburg, Florida, has served as the home of the Tampa Bay Rays since 1998. The stadium is a renowned tourist and sports fan attraction, and it has held several events over the years.
Tropicana Field, formerly known as the Florida Suncoast Dome, was erected in 1986 to recruit a Major League Baseball franchise to the Tampa Bay area. The HOK Sport Venue Event developed the dome, which was one of the country’s first indoor baseball stadiums. The stadium was built with a combination of public and private financing, with the majority of the money coming from the city of St. Petersburg.
After years of petitioning, Major League Baseball awarded the Tampa Bay Devil Rays an expansion franchise in 1995, and Tropicana Field was chosen as their home stadium. On March 31, 1998, the Devil Rays played their inaugural game at Tropicana Field in front of a sellout crowd of 45,369 spectators.
Tropicana Field has hosted numerous historic moments in Tampa Bay Ray’s history over the years. The Rays won their first American League pennant and made their first World Series appearance in 2008, falling in five games to the Philadelphia Phillies. At Tropicana Stadium in 2011, pitcher Matt Garza threw the first no-hitter in Rays history. In 2017, Evan Longoria blasted a game-winning walk-off home run in the final game of the season, propelling the Rays into the playoffs for the first time since 2013.
Despite its rich heritage, Tropicana Field has received criticism throughout the years for its old-fashioned design and lack of amenities. The ballpark contains 25,000 seats, making it one of the smallest in Big League Baseball. The permanent canopy of the dome has also been chastised for making the stadium feel dark and claustrophobic, especially during day games.
There have been speculations in recent years about the idea of constructing a new stadium for the Rays. The team announced plans for a new stadium in Ybor City, Tampa’s historic area, in 2018. The plans, however, fell through, and the team is now looking at other solutions.
Tropicana Field is a significant part of the Tampa Bay community, despite the criticism and uncertainty surrounding its future. Over the years, the stadium has held various events, including concerts, college football games, and professional wrestling fights. It hosted the Final Four in 1999 when Connecticut defeated Duke to win the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship.
Tropicana Field is well-known for its unique characteristics in addition to hosting sporting events. Before games, fans can engage with a 10,000-gallon tank filled with live rays in the stadium’s center field area. The tank is a component of the Rays Touch Tank, which was built in 2006 to promote conservation and education.
Tropicana Field’s catwalks, which support the stadium’s roof, are another distinguishing feature. The catwalks have been a source of contention throughout the years, as they have interfered with fly balls and resulted in some bizarre field plays.
Despite its shortcomings, Tropicana Field is a treasured institution in the Tampa Bay area.
